The Johnson Bed, “My First Real Build”
This king-size bed was my first commissioned piece. While I had made a tiny shelf here and there to adorn my house, and the workbenches seen in the background, where I made said shelves, this was “my first real build”. It was commissioned by a military family to replace their old bed, and rather than go out to the store and buy one, they opted to have a one-of-a-kind piece. As you will see in the pictures, there is a door in the middle. The reasoning behind this is that, this being a solid wood bed, with an exceedingly sturdy internal structure, it is a heavy piece of furniture. For a military family, you can count on moving every several years, so we wanted to build something that could withstand this lifestyle, but that was also not a burden to move when the time came. It is for this reason that this bed breaks down into four main parts: headboard, footboard, and two sections that form the base for the mattress. This was a challenging build as the timeframe for the whole build was to be finished in less than 10 days; their next duty station awaited.
